Next Generation Manufacturing Canada launched a call for proposals for its Sustainable Manufacturing Challenge, which seeks projects that support Canada’s path to net-zero GHG emissions, targeting challenges like emissions reduction. NGen will invest up to $35 million of Global Innovation Cluster funding, and will further raise more than $65 million from industry to launch $100 million in new collaborative projects.

Canada’s Building Trades Unions launched “Building it green”, heralding it as “the first comprehensive, climate-focused construction education curriculum designed for tradespeople, by tradespeople”. The curriculum will provide apprentices, trainers, and journeymen “with a deep understanding of how climate change and sustainability intersect with construction, and the impact they have on Canada’s future”.

McMaster University wanted to upgrade many of its buildings to a flexible control platform to ensure better efficiency and building management, while simplifying the control of things such as air quality, temperature, and carbon emissions. The challenge lay in migrating legacy systems across campus—some with 1960s technology—and newly constructed, digitally enabled buildings.

The Government of Canada is supporting New Brunswick in carrying out its Enhanced Energy Savings Program, which is designed to help homeowners make energy efficiency upgrades to their homes. Environment and Climate Change Canada says the program supports the installation of heat pumps, the improvement of insulation and air sealing and, among other measures, aims to help residents move away from home heating oil.
